Malawi PHOTOS: FIFA President meets new Malawi FA boss Fleetwood Haiya

FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Wednesday met the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) new President Fleetwood Haiya in Saudi Arabia.

Infantino said: “It was a great pleasure to meet the new Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya and listen to his very detailed and far-reaching plans for developing football in his country.

“We talked about the importance of good infrastructure for football development and the role that football can play in education. Malawi is a country with a huge football potential and, with the support of the FIFA Forward development programme and the increased opportunities for member associations to participate in global competitions, I believe that together we can put Malawian football in the spotlight.”

Haiya met Infantino in Saudi Arabia alongside his general secretary Alfred Gunda. The two will also attend the FIFA World Club Championship and the FIFA Football Summit and are expected back on Saturday. He elected the new President after he defeated incumbent Walter Nyamilandu during the association’s elections held at Mzuzu Hotel in Mzuzu last Saturday.

Haiya, who is Super League of Malawi (SULOM) president amassed 23 votes against Nyamilandu’s 13. In his acceptance speech, Haiya said he was humbled to be elected as the FAM president and that he would immediately start implementation of his manifesto code-named “transforming the game”.
