La Liga Santander Almeria Appoints Pepe Mel As New Manager

Almeria’s coach Gaizka Garitano was fired on Wednesday having only taken over from Vicente Moreno who was fired, Pepe Mel was named the new coach as the bottom team who continues to hunt for their first La Liga victory.

With just 10 games remaining, Almeria needs to win 14 points to avoid becoming the first team to go the entire Spanish top flight season without winning.

The worst record in the league is two wins, which is held by four clubs, most notably Sporting Gijon in 1997–98.

After just 12 games in charge, former Real Betis and West Bromwich Albion manager Mel departed his previous club, OFI Crete, in February.

Almeria still needs two more points to break Derby County’s record, which was achieved in the 2007–08 Premier League, for the lowest season total in one of Europe’s top five divisions.
