Olympic Games Mwape confident Zambia’s Copper Queens will overcome Atlas Lionesses

Zambia national women’s team coach Bruce Mwape is confident that the Copper Queens will record a positive result in Friday’s 2024 Paris 2024 Olympics final round, first leg qualifier against Morocco.

Speaking during a pre-match press briefing held at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola Thursday morning, Mwape disclosed that his technical bench is aware that Zambia was up against a strong team and they have since prepared well enough to ensure victory.

“The team is ready for the game against Morocco, we have got a full squad which comprises locals and (foreign-based) professionals. We know that we are meeting a strong team, Morocco is not an easy team and we have managed to put everything in place and we can promise the soccer fans that we will make sure that we carry the day,” Mwape said.

Asked if he was moved by Morocco having World Cup-winning former Spain coach Jorge Vilda in charge of the Atlas Lionesses, Mwape said Morocco and Spain were two different sides.

“He (Vilda) hasn’t brought Spain to Morocco; I am sure he has some problems. We have looked at his tactics and I am sure he will try to apply the Spain tactics to Morocco but we have seen most of his tactics and we will face them head on,” Mwape remarked.

Mwape also said the return of Madrid CFF midfielder Grace Chanda is a boost to the team that experienced lapses in midfield. “We did agree that we did not play well in the last game, that was our homework and we have done our homework according to the way we expected to play the last game,” said Mwape.

“We have included Grace (Chanda) who has been out due to illness, she has recovered and we have (also) called in players like Rhoda Chileshe just to help our in midfield, I think that (the midfield) problem has been sorted out and you should expect a different approach.”
