Olympic Games Super Falcons To Depart For South Africa On Sunday

Following their narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg, the Super Falcons will depart Nigeria on Sunday night in preparation for Tuesday’s second leg of the final Round of 2024 Olympic Games qualifier.

On Friday night, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Captain Rasheedat Ajibade’s well-executed 42nd minute penalty ended the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament qualifying match between reigning champions South Africa and nine-time African champions Nigeria.

Ajibade’s substitution of himself in the box just minutes before the Super Falcons broke forward once more, and Ajibade, who is based in Spain, made no mistake in powering the ball past Kaylin Swart.

Ihezuo, a forward on loan from Banyana, was a genuine thorn in the neck for them as her quickness often caught their defence off guard, but Nigeria was unable to capitalise on dead-ball situations either before or after Ajibade’s goal.

Halfway into the second half, an excellent pass from the incisive Thembi Kgatlana allowed Jermain Seoposenwe to send a thunderbolt from 20 yards out, requiring goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to make a world-class save.

Since the Falcons are just ahead in the match, there is still a lot to play for in Tuesday’s return leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Attention has already been drawn to this match.

The Super Falcons depart Lagos on Sunday night, and the Banyana return to Johannesburg on Saturday morning.
