Fighting Wrestling –Olympic Games: A Russian wrestler renounces his Olympic gold medal

Protests continue against the IOC’s decision to exclude the wrestling from the Olympic program of 2020.

While the American and Iranian Federations are planning a joint action, Russia is not an exception.
The Russian, Sagid Murtazaliev decided to render his gold medal to protest against the recommendation of the IOC. The Russian was Olympic wrestling champion at the Games in Sydney in 2000.
“This decision was very difficult to make,” he writes, “but after much thought, I decided to follow the same approach as the Bulgarian Federation President, Valentin Yordanov.”

The latter sacred in 1996, had recently renounced his gold medal also to protest against the exclusion of the discipline.

Sagid Murtazaliev decided to act to protest against the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suppress the wrestling from the program of the 2020 Olympic Games.
According to the Russian champion, the removal of the discipline from the Olympics would lead to a lack of appeal to young people and a gradual disappearance of the discipline.

The final validation of the Olympic program in 2020 will be in September. Until then, the wrestling is in competition with seven other sports: squash, climbing, karate, wushu, baseball / softball, wakeboarding and skating sports. Only one of them will be rescued by the IOC.
