Euro 2020 Eric Abidal declared fit to play for Barcelona

The 33-year-old France defender’s last appearance for Barcelona was in February 2012.

Barcelona says Eric Abidal is fit to play for the first time since receiving a liver transplant last April.

Abidal has had two long-term layoffs because of his liver. He underwent surgery to remove a liver tumor in March 2011 and returned to the team before the end of the season. The France international had to stop playing a second time last spring when doctors determined he needed a transplant.

Abidal twitted; at 1:25 PM – 21 feb 13, “More seriously, Large return match in prospect to the Nou Camp against Milan. But before those places at 4 important matches. Visca Barça!!”

According to fcbarcelona.com, the Frenchman is once again available for first team selection after recovering from a liver transplant last April

Following training this morning, Éric Abidal received the wonderful news that he is in good enough condition to play for the first team in what remains of the current season. The French defender underwent a liver transplant on April 10, 2012.

It has been a long road to recovery for Abidal ever since. In early October, he went with club physio Emili Ricart to spend several days in the Catalan mountains at Vall d’Aran, where he started following a specific training programme. Two months later, on December 19, he was able to train with the rest of the squad.

Abidal has not played for the first team since February 26, 2012 away to Atlético Madrid, when FCB won 2-1.

He’s been training with the team since December.
