Nigeria Tranzonspor Appoints Newton As Manager Ahead Next Season

Nigerian coach Edward John Ikem Newton has been officially appointed on a permanent basis as Trabzonspor coach ahead of next season.

The club in. a statement on its official website on Sunday confirmed the appointment following Newton achievement within a short period of time.

The former Chelsea coaching staff joined the Turkish Super Lig club in February.

However following the departure of Tranzonsporz manager Huseyin Cimsir, Newton was appointed as interim manager.

He went on help the club win the Turkish Cup following a 2-0 victory over Alanyaspor last week.

Trapzonspor in a statement on Sunday wrote:

Our board of directors has decided to continue in the new season with Eda die Newton as coach. 

“We wish Newton success in his post.”

This will be his first permanent job as a manager having been an assistant with Roberto Di Matteo when they won then Champions League and the FA Cup in 2012.

He was also part of Guus Hiddink coaching staff.

Newton came from the rank with Chelsea having played for the Youth team from 1985 to 1990.

He spent nine years with the senior team making 165 appearances with eight goals.

His only international cap was for the England U-21 team in 1993 where he made just two appearances and never played for any national team.

The former Chelsea midfielder started his coaching career with Milton Keynes Dons (MK Dons) as Assistant manager.

Also he was an assistant manager with West Bromwich Albion from 2009-2011 before joining Chelsea in the same capacity where he spent four years.
