CAF Champions League group stage draw took place this afternoon after CAF confirmed yesterday the four seeded pots. Kaizer Chiefs have avoided both Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly in one of Africa’s prestigious competitions.  

According to the points on CAF’s five-year ranking system Giants, Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, Espérance de Tunis and TP Mazembe were all seeded in pot 1. 

This meant that the aforementioned clubs and all clubs seeded in the same pot would avoid each other in the group stages.

As CAF confirmed this afternoon, defending champions, Al Ahly will not be making a trip to South Africa in the group stages. With Pitso Mosimane missing out on the chance of coming up against both his former employees and former domestic rivals in Sundowns and Chiefs respectively. 

Below are the four groups after the CAF’s draw this afternoon.

Pot 1 : Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, Espérance de Tunis, TP Mazembe

Pot 2 : Zamalek, Mamelodi Sundowns, Horoya, AS Vita Club

Pot 3 : Al Hilal, Petro de Luanda, Simba , MC Alger

Pot 4 : Al Merrikh, CR Belouizdad, Teungueth, Kaizer Chiefs
