Africa Soccer Kaizer Chiefs Mourning Another Death In The Mathoho Family

The Kaizer Chiefs family in mourning again after experienced defender Eric Mathoho suffered another death in his family. South Africa’s most famous football club has confirmed that long-standing defender Eric Mathoho’s father has tragically passed on.

The 30-year-old Venda born defender joined Kaizer Chiefs from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2012. And he has made over 250 appearances for the club.

Mathoho, who sadly lost his sister during 2020, will now have to deal with the grief of losing his father. The latter passed away at the age of 75. The towering defender will likely miss this weekend’s crucial clash against Maritzburg United on Saturday further to the sad event. As Kaizer Chiefs gave compassionate leave to Mathoho last year following the death of his sister.

We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to ‘Tower’, the Mathoho family and friends. Tower has been granted compassionate leave to be with family during this trying time.” A statement read in June 2020.

Kaizer Chiefs host Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Amakhosi will be reunited with former coach Ernst Middendorp for the first time since his abrupt departure from the club after failing to win the league last season.

Eric Mathoho won two league titles with the Amakhosi in 2012/13 and 2014/15 respectively while also lifting the MTN8 title in 2014. The Amakhosi will most definitely miss his presence this weekend should he be granted compassionate leave.

Kaizer Chiefs head into this weekend’s clash in 13th position, just two points above the relegation zone. However they’ll be high in spirit following their historic CAF Champions League group stage qualification over the past week.
