African players abroad Belgian-Born Nigerian Striker Cyriel Dessers Sent Gernot Rohr A Reminder

Racing Genk thrashed Westerlo 5-1 in a friendly on Tuesday. Cyriel Dessers was the only scorer in this game. And the Belgian-born Nigerian striker sent Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr a reminder of his qualities.

Coach John van den Brom used the friendly to hand match minutes to some fringe players in the squad before the trip to Antwerp on Saturday, April 17.

The former Heracles Almelo man, top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, was not considered for the Super Eagles last four Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches after losing his goalscoring touch at Genk.

Dessers has found playing opportunities hard to come by this season. As he is behind the Belgian First Division A leading scorer Paul Onuachu in manager John van den Brom’s pecking order of attackers.

His last start in the league was against KAS Eupen 165 days ago. While he has made 22 appearances off the bench.

In 29 competitive outings for Genk in 2020-2021, Dessers has managed four goals and provided three assists.

Rohr is expected to announce his squad list for June’s World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Central African Republic within the next one month.
