COSAFA CAF Women’s Champions League draw offers interesting ties

The draw for the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers for Southern Africa zone of Cosafa has provided some interesting ties.

The draw took place today, Thursday, in South Africa where seven teams were split into two groups, including one with four teams.

South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies lead Group A which also has Lesotho Defence Force, Double Action Ladies (Botswana) and Manzini Wanderers LFC (Eswatini).

Group B comprises Green Buffaloes from Zambia, Black Rhino Queens (Zimbabwe) and TURA Magic FC of Namibia.

Commenting about the draw, Cosafa General Secretary, Sue Destombes said: “This is a momentous day for us in the COSAFA region. This is something that we have had on our radar for a while, but it’s a great initiative from CAF to implement a Champions League competition and do the qualifiers at a zonal level.”

The qualifiers will be played from August 26 to September 4 when top two teams from each pool will advance to the semifinals.

Overall champion will qualify for the continental league stage scheduled to take place later this year.

The first edition will see champions of each of the six CAF zones competing for a spot in the competition.

The hosts and a wild card entry will join six zonal champions at the ultimate continental finals that will see teams split into two groups each of four.
