FIFA World Cup Zimbabwe coach recalls Nakamba and company

Zimbabwe caretaker coach Norman Mapeza has had the luxury of recalling England-based players to the Warriors’ squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Ghana.

Mapeza has recalled Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba alongside Plymouth Argyle defender Brendan Galloway and Tendai Darikwa of Wigan Athletic.

The England-based players missed Group G matches against South Africa and Ethiopia earlier this month due to strict Covid-19 travel restrictions in England.

Now, the England-based stars are all set to travel to Ghana on October 9 for a dance with the Black Stars.

However, the availability of the players for the reverse match in Harare on October 12 is subject to confirmation, according to Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa).

England-based Warriors are available for the 9 October match in Ghana because the venue is not on Britain’s COVID-19 red-list. Negotiations to get the players for the Harare tie on 12.10 are still ongoing,” Zifa tweeted.

There is also room in the Warriors’ squad for Marshall Munetsi from Remis in France and Teenage Hadebe of Houston Dynamo in America.

Zifa recalled the 49-year-old Mapeza to take charge of the Warriors after sacking Croatian Zdravko Logarusic.

Mapeza will be trying to right the wrongs of the Warriors campaign that veered off track after a  goalless home draw against South Africa then an away 1-0 defeat in Ethiopia.

Zimbabwe has never qualified for the World Cup finals but even if they don’t make the flight to Qatar 2022, their fans expect decent results from a galaxy of stars such as Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona.
