Africa Soccer South Africa step down from hosting 2021 FIFA Club World Cup

FIFA Club World Cup

South African Football Association (SAFA) released a statement on Saturday afternoon saying they can no longer organize the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup due the short time ahead but also Covid-19 related issues.

After Japan pulled out of hosting the event, South Africa were among the first countries to propose themselves to FIFA.

SAFA president Dany Jordaan even had a meeting with the football’s governing body president Gianni Infantino in recent weeks.

However, considering the kick off date of the competition (December 9), and the time left for the organization, the 2010 World Cup host country said it is impossible to host the event.

Apart from the timing, Covid-19 is another obstacle for the event to take place in South Africa which is red-listed by United Kingdom where European champions Chelsea will come from.

“With regards to the FIFA Club World Cup, the SAFA NEC said the issue of the short period of time left to bid and put all processes in place was proving a challenge. The FIFA Club World Cup is scheduled to take place in December”, a statement on SAFA’s website reads.

“SAFA will liaise with the government regarding the return of fans to the stadiums that is a prerequisite for hosting the Club World Cup.

“For South Africa to host the Club FIFA World Cup, the nation needs to reach the 70 percent vaccination threshold.

“South Africa is currently red listed by Great Britain where European champions Chelsea will come from, another possible hindrance to the process.

“Therefore, SAFA NEC resolved that they will not be pursuing the matter of hosting this event.”
