Africa Soccer WAFCON 2022: Coach Ellis says SA were overelaborate against Burundi

South Africa senior women’s football team coach Desiree Ellis has said her team should have scored more goals against Burundi in Morocco on Thursday evening.

Ellis said this in a post-match interview after Banyana Banyana beat Burundi 3-1 to qualify for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarterfinals.

I thought that we had enough on the field to get a result but I felt we overelaborated at times and most of the shots that we took were practically straight at the goalkeeper [Jeanine Irakoze] unfortunately player of the match,” she said.

The coach said her team were not clinical enough up front in this Group C encounter at Stade Moulay Hassan.

“We tried to change, we looked better and we created a lot of opportunities. We said we needed three points, we said these points were massive to get us into the next stage and the three points are there,” Ellis added.

South Africa scored through Thembi, Motau and Linda Mutlhalo whereas Anniela Uwiwana grabbed Burundi’s consolation goal.

Ellis said Banyana Banyana must improve on finishing and defending ahead of the dead-rubber match against Botswana.

The Mares lost to Nigeria who earlier started the tournament with a shock 2-1 loss to Banyana Banyana.
