Zambia Zambia Beat Namibia To Lift Sixth COSAFA Cup Title

Zambia defeated Namibia 1-0 in overtime on Sunday night to win the 2022 COSAFA Cup for a joint-record sixth time.

Goalkeeper Charles Kalumba, Saddam Phiri, and Joshua Mutale were all recalled by Chipolopolo after they narrowly defeated Senegal in the semifinals.

The Brave Warriors stayed the same from their victory over Mozambique.

Early on, Zambia was aggressive, and Kelvin Kampamba nearly started the scoring with a rocket from outside the box that missed the top corner.

Both teams struggled to create chances in the final third of the field.

Kampamba fancied his chances for Zambia just before the hour mark with a long-range shot that went over the crossbar, and that became the theme moving forward as there were no clear-cut goal threats in the opening period.

Early in the second half, the Brave Warriors were deep in defense, but Aprocius Petrus had a chance to break the tie just before the hour mark with a curled set-piece from a diagonal angle that nearly missed the far post.

Albert Kangwanda had an excellent opportunity after being let through in the box on minute 72, but he curled his shot wide of the far post as Chipolopolo kept up their intense pressure on Namibia.

Following that, Patrick Gonwe took the place of Kapumbu in an attacking change made by Moses Sichone.

In the final minutes, Bethuel Muzeu was replaced in Namibia’s front line by Solomon Omseb.

Despite the teams’ best efforts, overtime had to be played because regulation time could not be used to decide the winner.

Immanuel Heita had an incredible chance after Kalumaba parried a free-kick on his path in the box during the early moments of extra time, but he ballooned his shot over the crossbar from close range.

Namibia was more motivated during this time.

In the second overtime period, Zambia regained control of the match.

Albert Kangwanda then miraculously broke the score in the final eight minutes with a dipping shot from distance that deflected off the top post and bounced off goalkeeper Edward Maova.

Three minutes later, Absalom Limbondi could have tied the score for Namibia after getting a clear shot on goal in the box, but Kalumba blocked his attempt, allowing Chipolopolo to hold on and tie Zimbabwe’s record of six championships.
