CHAN CHAN Qualifiers: South Africa Grab First Leg Advantage Against Comoros

Bafana Bafana have secured a slender 1-0 win over Comoros in the first leg of their African Nations Championship qualifier on Friday.

Bafana Bafana stand-in coach Helman Mkhalele was the man in charge in the absence of national team coach Hugo Broos.

Khulekani Shezi, the Royal AM central midfielder, scored a late second-half goal to ensure a winning start to Bafana Bafana’s African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifying campaign in the first leg. The second leg will be played on July 30 at the Dobsonville Stadium, Johannesburg (kick-off 15:00).

South Africa dominated the game in both halves of the match. But they lacked the much-needed final touch to bury their opponents.

The visitors created plenty of chances but couldn’t deliver the final blow that would have made the result more comfortable.

Despite the late inclusions in the South African squad, the starting XI managed to dictate play in the opening half but were unable to score. The second half progressed in a similar fashion, but the 21-year-old Shezi broke the ice towards the end of the match.

Comoros tried to fight back by applying pressure of their own. But South Africa remained resolute in the rearguard to deny them those scoring opportunities as they held on to their lead.
