This year’s competition offers a genuine opportunity to end the top-six clubs’ dominance dating back to Swansea’s victory in 2013.

With Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham already eliminated, one of Manchester City or Liverpool will follow them after their match on Thursday night.

Leicester, the FA Cup champions in 2021, has a long history in the League Cup and will consider themselves one of the clubs capable of going all the way after two historic victories in 1997 and 2000.

With goals from Tielemans, Perez, and Vardy in the first and second halves as well as a goal from Perez in the second half, progress against the League One underachievers was never in doubt.

After interim manager Dean Lewington underwent hamstring surgery earlier in the day, the Dons, who are currently without a manager after Liam Manning was fired ten days ago, were taken over by veteran midfielder Bradley Johnson.

This experience may cause Johnson to reconsider a coaching career.

The Foxes started off well and had already missed a few good opportunities when they seized the lead in the 18th minute, displaying no signs of rust.

Harvey Barnes was sent clear down the left after Luke Thomas made a defense-splitting pass, and he appeared ready to set up Vardy, but Barnes’ cross was just behind him. Vardy quickly adjusted and attempted to flick the ball home from behind him.

Jamie Cumming of the Dons made a save, but the rebound went right to Tielemans, who scored from 12 yards away.

The League One team enjoyed brief periods of offense, but they believed they should have been awarded a free kick that would have almost certainly resulted in the red card of Leicester defender Wout Faes.

It was put on a plate for him by Timothy Castagne’s pinpoint cross, allowing the striker to nod home from close range.

The League One team had brief offensive opportunities, but they felt they should have been awarded a free kick after Leicester defender Wout Faes looked to tackle Daniel Harvie on the edge of the box as he was through on goal.

The ruthless Premier League team killed their hosts on the counter attack in the 29th minute, when another Thomas ball set Perez free and the Spaniard coolly slotted home at the near post.

Referee Andre Marriner waved away protests less than 60 seconds later.

Vardy’s fourth goal of the year put Leicester ahead less than five minutes after the restart.

Castagne and Kelechi Iheanacho both missed golden opportunities for Brendan Rodgers’ team, who will begin their Premier League campaign on Boxing Day and still need James Maddison to rejoin the lineup.
