FIFA World Cup FIFA U20 World Cup: Flying Eagles Stun Argentina To Reach Quarterfinals

Flying Eagles of Nigeria ended Argentina’s streak of 10 straight U-20 World Cup triumphs as they stunned the FIFA U20 World Cup host out of the tournament.

The La Abliceleste had won their first three games in this edition and all seven when they served as the tournament’s host in 2001, but the Flying Eagles turned the tide.

Nigeria advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup by shocking the tournament hosts and favorites Argentina with goals in the second half from Ibrahim Muhammad and Rilwanu Haliru Sarki.

The Flying Eagles had a strong opening, but as the first half went on, La Albiceleste took control.

As halftime drew near, Veliz had two half-chance shots at goal, heading one just wide and flicking the other into Kingsley Aniagboso’s arms.

Nigeria achieved success just after the hour.

Muhammad poked the ball past Federico Gomes Gerth with help from Emmanuel Umeh’s flick over the top.

In an effort to equalize, Argentina increased the tempo of the game and came agonizingly near when Luka Romero’s low shot hit the inside of the post, but Haliru Sarki’s late header gave Nigeria the victory.

Nigeria will now play the winner of Sunday’s quarterfinals in Santiago del Estero between Ecuador and Korea Republic.
