Europe AS Roma’s Mourinho quits role after four-match ban

As Roma coach Jose Mourinho has decided to quit the Uefa Football Board with immediate effect.

This is after the Portuguese tactician was banned for the team’s next four European games by Uefa for verbally abusing referee Anthony Taylor after the Italian club lost in the Europa League final to Sevilla on May 31.

Mourinho has already communicated his decision to Uefa director and Chief of Football Zvonimir Boban in a letter, where he wrote: “Dear Mr. Boban, in thanking you for the invitation you extended to me to be a member of the Uefa Football Board, I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will be renouncing to my participation in this group.

“The conditions which I so strongly believed in when I joined are no longer standing and I felt the obligation to take this decision. I kindly ask that you also communicate my decision to the President Mr. Aleksander Čeferin.”

After the defeat against Sevilla, footage circulated of the Roma coach approaching the referee in the stadium garage after the game in Budapest, Hungary, and calling him a “disgrace” with an expletive.

Roma lost a penalty shootout to Sevilla after a 1-1 draw that was the Italian club’s last chance to qualify for the Champions League next season. Uefa also fined Roma €50,000 (about $55,000) and will block the club from selling tickets for its next away game in the Europa League.
