Egypt Al Ahly crowned Egyptian champions after Pyramids FC suffer defeat

Al-Ahly secured a record-extending 43rd Egyptian Premier League crown without taking the pitch after their rivals Pyramids FC were beaten 2-1 by Ceramica Cleopatra on Monday.

The Red Devils, who only last month won a record-extending 11th title in African Champions League, have hauled five titles since last October under coach Marcel Koller, who is enjoying his first season in Egypt. The Cairo-based giants have now amassed 75 points from 29 matches, with five to play, eight points ahead of Pyramids, who have two to conclude the season.

The latest success was achieved after Pyramids suffered a 2-1 defeat against Ceramica Cleopatra on Monday at Arab Contractors Stadium. A double in either half from Salah Mohsen enabled Cleopatra to carry the day. Mohsen scored in the 45th minute before adding the second in the 83rd minute.

Though Pyramids had levelled matters in the 37th minute courtesy of Karim Hafez, they failed to add to the goal and thus lost the battle allowing Al Ahly to write more success without kicking a ball. This is Al Ahly’s 43rd Egyptian Premier League title and their first since 2020, having lost the previous two editions to arch-rivals Zamalek.

Moreover, it’s the club’s third trophy of the season after winning the Champions League over Wydad Casablanca and the 2023 Egypt Super Cup over Pyramids. They still have a chance to complete the quadruple if they win the 2023 Egypt Cup, where they are set to face El-Dakhelya in the Round of 16.
