COSAFA COSAFA CUP: Flames Overshadows Comoros To Reach Semi Finals

Tuesday afternoon at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Malawi defeated Comoros 2-0 in a decisive encounter to reach the semifinals of the 2023 Cosafa Cup.

Chawanangwa Kaonga and Patrick Mwaungulu’s goals helped Malawi win the championship game for the third time in a row, extending their lead at the top of Group B to nine points.

During the opening 10 minutes of the game, there wasn’t much separating the two teams, but Malawi had a little advantage in terms of ball control.

Malawi pressed high and sought to pressure the opponents into making mistakes, while Comoros aimed to move the ball out of the back with exquisite build-up play.

As the game went on, Malawi appeared dangerous and produced many of scoring opportunities around the halfway mark of the first half.

After launching an offensive, Malawi was given a penalty in the 28th minute after Patrick Mwaungulu’s deception resulted in Ishmael Mohamed being caught for pace within his own penalty area.

Chawanangwa Kaonga’s penalty kick sent the custodian the wrong way as he gave his team a well-earned lead.

Moments later, Malawi extended their advantage thanks to a goal by Mwaungulu in the 36th minute.

The attacker’s shot bounced off the upright and past the rival custodian with Kaonga’s assistance.

With momentum in their favour, Malawi went into the halftime break two goals ahead thanks to goals from Kaonga and Mwaungulu.

After the restart, Malawi remained a threat and made a concerted effort to score the third goal.

Comoros struggled to keep control of the ball when under pressure to perform.

Comoros launched a series of attacks as the hour mark drew near, but they were swiftly repulsed by fierce Flames defence.

As the game went on, Malawi played the ball with assurance, much to the pleasure of the crowd of fans.

Comoros had better possession of the ball towards the end of the match as a result of Malawi backing off in last-ditch attempts to join the action.

Comoros caused a couple of difficulties for the opposing defence as the Flames began to manage the game.

But Malawi managed to hang on and win the 2023 Cosafa Cup once more.
