athletics Kipyegon shatters another world Record as Omanyala shine

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon broke another World Record in a span of less than two months after she won the Mile race at the Monaco Diamond League on July 21.

Kipyegon obliterated the field, clocking 4.07.64 to lower Sifan Hassan’s record of 4.12.33 set in 2019. It is the third world record that Kipyegon has broken after setting new records for the 1500m and 5000m at the Florence and Paris Diamond Leagues in June.

Sifan Hassan held the previous best with 4:12.33 at this meeting four years ago, but the double Olympic 1500m champion – who set new marks in the 1500m and 5000m earlier this season – consigned it to history in emphatic fashion.

The Kenyan crossed the line in 4:07.64, more than four and a half seconds quicker than Hassan’s mark, to cement her reputation as the greatest female middle-distance runner of her generation.

Kenya President William Ruto led the East African nation to praise Kipyegon’s latest achievement by saying: “Another World record has fallen. Faith Kipyegon’s peerless talent, supreme tenacity, and tremendous athleticism has lit up the world again this time in the 1-Mile Monaco Diamond League. Kenya celebrates Faith for being among the best athletes in our lifetime.”

Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala capped an excellent night for Kenyan athletes with his first Diamond League victory in the 100m. A photo finish was needed to split him and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, but Omanyala won in 9.92 with Tebogo clocking 9.93. Ackeem Blake was third in 10.00 ahead of fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake.
