Basketball FIBA AfroBasket: D’Tigress Are Champions For Fourth Consecutive Time

After defeating Senegal in Kigali, Nigeria’s D’Tigress continued to rule the continent, putting on another strong performance to win the 2023 Women’s Afrobasketball Championship.

Despite having a difficult time preparing, the players never let it get to them. As a result, they dominated the group stage of the championship, defeating both Egypt and DR Congo.

In the quarterfinal and semifinal victories over Ivory Coast and the host nation, Rwanda, they qualified for a tantalizing encounter with Senegal.

The championship game on Saturday at the BK Arena saw a competitive contest between the two teams, although D’Tigress controlled the first quarter to win it 19-10.

The Nigerian team maintained its strong play in the second quarter, leading 43-31 at the break.

In the third quarter, Senegal made a valiant comeback and reduced the deficit to a respectable 62-57.

The Senegalese put a lot of pressure on the team and worked extremely hard, but D’Tigress held on to win the game 84-74 and keep the championship for a fourth straight year.

Senegal was the only team in Africa up until today to have won the championship four times in a row, but D’Tigress was able to match that accomplishment after defeating the same Senegal in the final.
