CAF CONFEDERATION CUP CCC: Homeboyz fire blanks against Al Hilal Benghazi

Kakamega Homeboyz failed to utilise home advantage as they settled for a 0-0 draw against visiting Al Hilal Benghazi in their first preliminary round first leg match of Caf Confederation Cup at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

Homeboyz, who are making their maiden appearance in the inter-club competition after winning the FKF Cup, were the better side from the first whistle and should have taken the lead in the 11th minute but Ambrose Sifuna wasted a glorious chance after dribbling past Al Hilal defenders only to be stopped by the goalkeeper.

In the 16th minute, Homeboyz had another chance when Brian Wekesa set up Moses Shumah with a teasing ball but the Al Hilal goalkeeper made a fantastic save to deny the towering player with a fingertip save. Eston Omengo curled in from the edge of the box, but his effort was well handled by the keeper, who had an outstanding game.

Al Hilal threatened two minutes later, their first attempt of the game but the Homeboyz keeper Farouk Shikhalo did well to put out his effort. In the second half, it was all Homeboyz once again as they tried to take the lead but Al Hilal defenders stayed tight at the back.

Homeboyz coach Patrick Odhiambo made his first change in the 46th minute when Kevin Amwayi paved the way for Stephen Opoku while Shumah was rested for Oscar Paul. Odhiambo made further changes by bringing out Eric Ambunya for Chris Masinza but despite their efforts to get a goal, they were put at bay by the visiting side.

Homeboyz will head to Benghazi seeking a win to advance to the second preliminary round of the competition.
