CAF CONFEDERATION CUP End of the road for Homeboyz after losing to Al Hilal

Kakamega Homeboyz were knocked out of the Caf Confederation Cup at the first hurdle after losing 4-1 against Al Hilal Benghazi in the return leg fixture of the first preliminary round at Benina Witnesses Stadium on Sunday.

The Kenyan side, who were making their maiden appearance in the inter-club competition by virtue of winning the FKF Shield Cup, lost the tie on a 4-1 aggregate scoreline having secured a 0-0 draw in the first leg played at Nyayo Stadium a week ago.

Abana Baingo under head coach Patrick Odhiambo found the going tough in Libya as they conceded the first goal in the 12th minute courtesy of Ifeanyi Eze. Osama Beleid then added the second in the 27th minute before Eze scored the third but his second of the day in the 32nd minute. Homeboyz threatened a comeback in the 41st minute when Moses Mudavadi found the back of the net but in the 87th minute; Kelvin Andoh drilled home the fourth to end any chance of the Kenyan side pulling a comeback in the game.

Homeboyz made their life difficult after failing to win the first leg which they dominated in Nairobi and a defensive blunder allowed Al Hilal to take a deserved lead with only 12 minutes played when Eze, who was unmarked tapped home a cross from Beleid. The North Africans were the better side and hungry for goals and they doubled their lead 15 minutes later when Beleid hit the roof of the net after goalkeeper Farouk Shikhalo had spilled a shot.

Al Hilal went 3-0 up 13 minutes to the half-time break when Eze rounded off two Homeboyz defenders before looping the ball past the advancing Shikhalo. Homeboyz reduced the deficit four minutes to the break when Mudavadi found himself with enough space inside Al Hilal’s danger zone, before smashing the ball home.

On resumption, coach Odhiambo pulled out Moses Shummah, who was tightly marked for Alex Imbusia while Gospel Otieno came in for Kevin Amwayi. However, the changes could not help Homeboyz as Al Hilal added the fourth three minutes to the final whistle when Andoh curled home from outside the box.

Al Hilal will now face Rayon Sports of Rwanda in the next stage of the competition.
