Rwanda Afcon 2023: Buschier named Rwanda coach ahead of Senegal clash

Rwanda’s football governing body (FERWAFA) has appointed French man Gerard Buschier to take charge of Amavubi as caretaker coach ahead of their final AFCON qualifier against Senegal at Huye Stadium on September 9.

Buschier, who currently serves as FERWAFA Technical Director since his appointment on September 15, 2022, will be assisted by Amavubi legend Jimmy Mulisa and Innocent Seninga who has been without a club since he was relieved of his duties as Sunrise FC head coach since the end of the 2022-23 season.

Buschier’s appointment as national team caretaker comes after the departure of outgoing coach Carlos Alos Ferrer who left the position in July to coach the Belarusian national team. And, considering the short time available for preparations, the FA’s executive committee decided to assign the three men to take charge for the only match before a substantive gaffer is named ahead of the World Cup qualifiers which begins in November.

Rwanda has no chance of making it to the AFCON finals in Cote D’Ivoire in January 2024 as they sit bottom of Group L with just two points but the final game against the African champions will offer the coaches a chance to test some new players ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

Both Mulisa and Seninga have had stints with Amavubi previously.
