UEFA Champions League Bellingham Scores Late To Hand Madrid Narrow Win Over Union Berlin

Real Madrid defeated Union Berlin 1-0 in their Group C match at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, spoiling the Bundesliga team’s Champions League debut. Jude Bellingham scored deep in extra time.

Before replacement Federico Valverde’s effort bounced off two defenders in Union’s packed penalty area and fell to Bellingham, who put it in the net for his sixth goal in six games this season, the game in Madrid appeared to be headed for a draw.

Real’s sixth straight victory was made possible by the 94th-minute goal, which also assured that Real maintained their perfect record this season.

Real had the majority of the ball in the first half but struggled to break down Union, who played staunch defence under the commanding leadership of veteran Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci, who joined Real from Juventus in the summer.

Joselu, a forward for Real, was active right away but missed two chances with his head early in the game.

The 14-time champions got the game going quickly in the second half, and Rodrygo twice came close to opening the score. The first time, he fired a spectacular volley that cannoned against the post, but it was saved by goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow from close range.

As the second half went on and Union started to tyre, Carlo Ancelotti’s team began to tighten the screws, and the Italian coach added Valverde and Toni Kroos.

The German defence was broken when midfielder Bellingham scored on his Champions League debut for Real, just as Joselu, Antonio Rudiger, and Rodrygo all wasted late opportunities to score for Union.

The visitors will be quite frustrated that they gave up the lead so late, but they will be encouraged by their effort and think they have a genuine chance of advancing through the group stage.

On October 3, Union will host Braga of Portugal, while Real will travel to Napoli, the reigning Italian champions.
