UEFA Champions League Mikel Arteta provides Mohamed Elneny injury update

Arsenal will take part in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2016-17, having finished second in the Premier League last season.

The Gunners were drawn in Group B with Europa League winners Sevilla, PSV Eindhoven, and French side Lens, opening their campaign against the Dutch side at the Emirates Stadium on September 20.

Mikel Arteta had confirmed his squad for the competition, which includes the club’s current longest-serving player Mohamed Elneny. Elneny hasn’t made an appearance for Arsenal since December 31 when he came on as a late substitute in a 4-2 win at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Speaking ahead of the PSV game, Arteta said: “Martinelli felt something in his hamstring and we need to do some further tests to assess if there is any big damage or not, but he will be out for tomorrow’s game, that’s for sure,” adding: “Mohamed Elneny is still young though! He’s in a good place, obviously, it’s been a while and it’s been a very significant injury, but I think he’s in the latter stages of that rehab process. He’s been training for almost two weeks with the team and he is in a good place. It’s always great to have him around.”

Mohamed Elneny is the only player in the current Arsenal squad remaining from the club’s previous Champions League campaign in 2016-17 and scored against Barcelona in a 3-1 defeat in 2016.
