CAF Champions League Al Ahly ease past St. George to reach group stage

Al Ahly defeated Ethiopia’s Saint George 7-0 on aggregate in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League at Cairo International Stadium on Friday night.

The Red Devils had earned a 3-0 away victory over Saint George in the first leg, thanks to goals from Hussein El-Shahat and Ahmed Abdelkader. They picked up where they left off last week as the African champions pulled off another dominant result in the return leg on Friday. Mohamed Magdy Afsha opened the scoring for Al Ahly inside the opening ten minutes with a stunning free-kick effort to give his side the early lead.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to double their advantage as Mahmoud Kahraba’s penalty secured a two-goal cushion after the half-hour mark. Five minutes later, Afsha latched on a cross at the far post to net his second and Al Ahly’s third of the evening to extend their lead.

With a comfortable scoreline, Al Ahly continued to create chances after the break and found their fourth following a well-constructed move. Mohamed Hany made a darting run forward on the right-hand side and produced a sublime cross that was met with a powerful header from Kahraba beyond Saint George’s Bahiru Negash.

The convincing win over two legs booked Al Ahly a spot in the CAF Champions League group stages, set to begin by the end of November.
