Uganda Shaban inspires KCCA past Vipers SC, Bright Stars pip Busoga United

KCCA FC finally picked their first win of the 2023-24 Uganda Premier League (UPL) campaign after defeating champions Vipers SC 3-1 at the MTN Omondi Stadium on Friday.

Brace hero Shaban Muhammad was too much to handle for the Venoms before Usama Arafat put it beyond doubt late on. Abubaker Lawal scored Vipers’ late consolation but it was not enough to stop the Kasasiro Boys from picking the vital victory.

The victory saw KCCA move to four points from seven matches but remain in the bottom three. Vipers remained third on 14 points, four behind leaders BUL, after seven matches. The 13-time league champions, KCCA, had lost their first five matches and drawn the sixth coming into this. Meanwhile, Soltilo Bright Stars picked their first win of the season when they edged Busoga United 3-2 in a five-goal thriller.

Nelson Senkatuka, Sam Ssenyonyi, and Yasin Mugume scored for Bright Stars at Kavumba Recreation Ground while Mugwa Bashamu and Joshua Ssentambule netted for the visitors. The win, Bright Stars first in seven matches, saw them move above the relegation zone with six points, while Busoga’s fourth defeat of the campaign has them two places above on seven points.

Elsewhere, URA and Kitara exchanged leads at Metha Stadium in Lugazi but both had to settle for a point in the end as they played out a 2-2 draw. This was also David Obua’s first league match in charge of the Tax Collectors since he took over the reins as head coach last week. Najib Fesali and Ivan Ahimbisibwe scored URA goals while the Tax Collectors’ old boy, Kabob Living, and former KCCA striker Brian Aheebwa netted for Kitara.
