CAF Champions League CAFCL: Pyramids, CR Belouizdad Off To Winning Ways

At the June 30 Stadium on Friday night, Egyptian team Pyramids FC defeated Congolese powerhouse TP Mazembe 1-0 to start their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League group campaign with a winning start.

The five-time African champions, who are vying for the top spot on the continent, faced a team that, like their Egyptian rivals, Al Ahly and Zamalek, is still trying to make a big impression on the continent.

As soon as play began, the hosts pushed Mazembe into their half and launched assault after attack in an attempt to score the first goal.

Even with experienced strikers like Fiston Mayele at their disposal, Mazembe barely caused any problems for the Egyptian team’s well-coordinated defence, which held firm throughout the match.

Despite the fact that there was nothing separating the two teams in the first verse, the hosts’ tactical adjustments allowed them to return from the interval with new concepts that were fully acknowledged.

Shortly after the break, South African forward Fagrie Lakay scored the game’s only goal in the 54th minute with a crisp finish from the left side to give the home team the lead.

The crucial victory provides head coach Jaime Pacheco’s team a strong start to a challenging Group A, which features the recently crowned African Football League winners Mamelodi Sundowns and Mauritanian champions and rookies Nouadhibou on Sunday afternoon.

Mazembe’s next encounter is against Sundowns the next weekend, while Pyramids travel to Nouadhibou, Mauritania. Both games take occur on Saturday, December 02 at 13:00 GMT.

In the second fixture of Friday, CR Belouizdad defeated Young Africans 3-0 to get their Campaign off to a flyer.
