AFCON AFCON 2023: Senegal Beat Guinea To Finish Unbeaten

Senegal picked all nine points and advanced to the round of 16 of the AFCON 2023 following a 2-0 win against Guinea at the Yamoussoukro Stadium.

Both teams advanced to the round of sixteen as the defending champions made it three wins out of three in Group C of the Africa Cup of Nations thanks to goals from Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye in the second half.

Senegal leads the pool with nine points, and Cameroon is second with four after defeating Guinea in goals scored. The latter, as one of the top third-placed teams, will also proceed.

Senegal, the winners of 2021 and finalists in the previous two, welcomed returned coach Aliou Cisse to the dugout after he spent the night in the hospital due to an infection after their match against Cameroon.

Cisse will be happy that his team put up another strong defensive showing because they scored eight goals while only giving up one goal during the pool stages.
Sadio Mane didn’t have a good day, but right before the hour, he had a great opportunity to break the game. He raced clean on goal, rounded Guinean keeper Ibrahim Kone, but his shot at an empty net went terribly wide.

Senegal did not have to wait long for the first goal, though, as on minute 61, Seck firmly headed into the net after Krepin Diatta’s free kick stole a march on Guinea’s defence.

In the last ten minutes, Senegal led 2-0 when replacement Ndiaye got a yard of space in the box and coolly extended the lead. Mane thought he had a second, but the goal was disallowed because he was way offside.
