AFCON AFCON 2023: Why Angola achieved knockout stage in Ivory Coast – Gaspar

Angola made history by recording two victories at the same Africa Cup of Nations for the first time after a 2-0 win against Burkina Faso on Tuesday and in doing so booked their first visit to the knockout rounds since 2010.

The COSAFA side finished top of Group D as striker Mabululu’s first half header and a stoppage time finish from Zini secured victory and sets up a round of 16 clash with a third place team from either Groups E or F, which could include COSAFA rivals South Africa or Namibia.

“We in the national team live as one family and that is what makes us solid on the field,” defender Kialonda Gaspar said. “My goal remains to help the national team, and we have the ability to advance. We will continue preparing for the rest of the competition.

“We were good on the field against Burkina Faso. The same goes for the tactical aspect. We played well as a group during the match, and we were the best on the field.“I think it is important to qualify. This is for us and the millions of Angolans back home.”
