Nigeria Premier League NPFL Matchday 22 Wrap: Enyimba Topple Lobi Stars As Abia Warriors Down Kwara United

Enyimba defeated Gombe United 4-0 on Matchday 22, at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, overtaking Lobi Stars to take the top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Enyimba took advantage of Gombe United’s problems to thrash them 4-0 and score the necessary goals to unseat Lobi Stars at the top of the league based on goals difference.

A day prior to the match, Mohammed Babaganaru, the head coach of Gombe United, resigned from his role as coach, citing a lack of backing from the State.

Mbaoma Chijioke netted a brace for the defending champions.

He scored the first goal from a penalty kick shortly before halftime, and he added to the total in the 57th minute by taking advantage of a defensive blunder.

A goal apiece from Uche Collins and Imoh Obot in the 70th and 94th minutes ensured a decisive outcome.

After their massive win, Enyimba climbed to 39 points and a +7 goals difference from 22 games, leapfrogging Lobi Stars, who are in second place with 39 points but a +5 goals difference.

Elsewhere in Ibadan, Tate Muritala of the Shooting Stars scored in stoppage time to give the Oluyole Warriors a crucial home victory over Bendel Insurance in Ibadan.

The goals from the former Akwa United and Wikki Tourists prevented the game from ending in a tie.

Bendel Insurance dropped to ninth place with 31 points after the loss, while Shooting Stars moved up to the eleventh slot with 30 points.

After falling short 1-0 against Niger Tornadoes in Aba, Abia Warriors were back on track as Sunday Megwo’s goal in the 53rd minute helped them best a resilient Kwara United 1-0.

The victory saw Abia Warriors moved to 10th place on the log while Kwara United dropped to 16th position with 25 points.
