CAF Champions League CAFCL: Sundowns Hold Young Africans To Stalemate In Tanzania

Young Africans and Mamelodi Sundowns fought to a highly tactical 0-0 draw in their first leg Quarter-Final match of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League on Saturday night in Dar El Salaam.

There was nothing separating the two teams at the 60, 000 Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Tanzanian turned out to watch the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup finalists from the previous season play the inaugural African Football League champions.

Both teams gave it their all, but equally strong goalkeeping and defence kept the game from concluding in a goal. Despite this, the contest was highly entertaining.

As per their enterprising nature, Sundowns dominated ball possession in an attempt to wear down their opponents, who retaliated with swift counterattacks.

In the 27th minute, Yanga had the first opportunity to score when Clement Mzize found himself through on goal, but his straight shot was easily gathered by the highly effective Ronwen Williams.

Teboho Mokoena almost caught Djigui Diarra off guard with one of his signature long-range strikes just seconds before the half.

Despite Sundowns possessing more of the ball, the hosts had the better opportunities after the break.

In the 57th minute, Mzize found himself back in Sundowns’ dangerous area when he climbed over his defenders to connect with a cross from Stephane Aziz Ki that went narrowly wide and left Williams down to the ground.

The finest chance for Yanga came in the 68th minute when Kennedy Musonda and Williams found themselves one on one, but the Sundowns custodian prevailed, making the save to deny the home team the lead.

The game finished goalless as it remained a very tactical contest in which both teams attacked cautiously and defended in large numbers.

Next Saturday, the two teams will square off again at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria for the return leg, which should be a really fascinating match to watch.
