Malawi Blantyre Zero lift inaugural FAM National Women’s Championship.

Blantyre Zero FC beat DD Sunshine 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to win the inaugural FAM National Women’s Championship.

The final took place at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe where Sunshine were hoping to continue with their dominance of the rivals from Blantyre.

However, the Maggie Chombo-Sadiki-coached Blantyre side had other ideas.

The visitors went ahead as Mary Chabvinda scored two goals in the first half to stun the hosts in front of a home crowd.

Sunshine refused to throw in the towel so early they pulled one goal back through Gladys Banda’s effort.

However, Blantyre restored their two-goal cushion from the penalty spot in the second half.

Sunshine goalkeeper Ruth Mvula had conceded a penalty after fouling Zainab Kapanda.

Vanessa Chikupila converted from the penalty spot sending Mvula the wrong way to seal the victory.

Finally, Blantyre made amends for the 3-0 loss they suffered to Sunshine in the Presidential Cup final of 2020.

The Southern Region-based Blantyre booked their place in the final after edging out Ascent Academy from Lilongwe 6-5 on post-match penalties after a barren tie in the semifinal.

In Lilongwe, Sunshine booked their place in the final after romping to a 4-0 win over rivals Skippers.
