Liverpool defender-in-chief Virgil Van Dijk has hailed the telepathy of understanding that he enjoys when playing alongside fit-again Cameroonian centre-back Joel Matip.

The Dutch defender commented on his partnership with Matip after Liverpool put up a fine display to beat Burnley 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Anfied and build on the 3-0 win over Norwich City.

All the centre-backs we have at the moment, whether it’s Joe or whether it’s Ibou, we all understand each other quite well. That’s very important on the pitch,” Van Dijk told the club’s official website.

Today [was] the same. Joel, we played together for a while now so we know our qualities, we know the things we can complement each other with.

Liverpool scored through Diego Jota and Senegalese attacker Sadio Mane to make it two wins on the bounce and Van Dijk attributed the wins to a solid attacking and defensive shifts they put.

“Obviously to win the first two games with no goals conceded is just a good thing, something to build on,” Van Dijk said.

It’s always tough against any opponent in the Premier League, today was nothing different. So, we’ll build on it, gain confidence, keep working hard and progress together.”

The return of Van Dijk—who is considered the best centre-back in the world—alongside Matip and Joe Gomez is expected to boost Liverpool’s push for the title which they surrended to Manchester City last season after being hit by injuries of all the main centre-backs.
