African players abroad Klopp refuses to blame Mohamed Salah for penalty miss

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has refused to blame Egypt forward Mohamed Salah after he missed a penalty in the 1-0 loss to Leicester City on Tuesday evening.

Klopp said Salah has been so efficient for Liverpool this campaign and his penalty miss reflects the overall poor performance of the team; hence blame cannot be placed on the Egyptian alone.

There’s not a little bit of blame or whatever,” Klopp told Liverpool website in a post-match interview.

“He scores usually from these situations but tonight he didn’t. It was a little bit like the whole game was. Mo is part of the team and usually he is better in this situation like the team is usually better in a football game. Tonight we weren’t and that’s why we lost.”

Substitute Ademola Lookman’s 59th-minute strike won Leicester the game. The Foxes also had to thank goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel who denied Salah from the penalty spot in the first-half.

Apart from the penalty miss, Klopp said his side was not at its best on Tuesday evening.

We were just not really ourselves tonight. So, we started OK, I can’t say differently, like what I said to all your colleagues outside. I think we started OK. I didn’t like 100 per cent the intensity even in the beginning, but sometimes you have starts like this. But then we lost rhythm and never found it really back,” he said.

It was Liverpool’s second Premier League defeat of the season leaving them six points off the pace with leaders and holders Manchester City.

City could stretch their lead further if they beat Brentford tonight before Liverpool and Chelsea lock horns on Sunday.
