Nigeria Fans Question The Appointment Of José Peseiro At The Head Of Super Eagles

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the appointment of José Peseiro as the new coach of the Super Eagles through a press release on Wednesday, December 29. This happened just eleven days from the start of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, the newly appointed coach will not be on the bench during the tournament in Cameroon. The Portuguese football tactician will only play the role of an observer.

It will be the the responsibility of the Nigerian Federation’s Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, who took over as interim coach following the dismissal of Gernot Rohr earlier this month, to be in charge of the Super Eagles at the AFCON.

The NFF noted that the AFCON is a good avenue for Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the tournament in Cameroon.

Aged 61, Peseiro has been unemployed since August 2021 after terminating his contract with the Venezuelan Federation over unpaid wages.

On his curriculum vitae, he previously worked at Real Madrid as assistant manager, before coaching Sporting CP, Panathinaikos, Rapid Bucharest, Sporting Braga and Porto among others.

Reacting to the appointment of Peseiro as Nigeria manager following the Nigerian Federation’s announcement on Facebook, some Super Eagles fans questioned the timing of the appointment. A supporter wanted to know the details of his contract and others discussed his relationship with ex-Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho.

Adebesin Babajide Adeyemi : “I am not against new foreign coach. But they must pay Rohr outstanding salary because of our country integrity, all the best to the team for the coming tournament“.

Dexter Jimmy Isaiah : “What are the content of his contract? How much is his salary? Where will he base? Who are the people he will be working with and the people he is coming with? We shouldn’t be doing things secrecy again. Let all the information be in public domain. And who is responsible for his salary?”

Faniran Abayomi Jonathan : “Why not wait till after afcon for this decisions!!! Austin Eguavon might win the tournament. And we may have a serious delicate issue at hand!!!Ok….. I hope u guys will always put the interest of Nigerian at heart b4 making any decisions thank you!!!

Emetuobi Miracle : “I don’t like this… They would have allowed Austin Eguavon to at least finish the AFCON before appointing Jose.”

Ikechukwu Isaac : “Is this new head coach related to Jose Morinho? The familiar name“.

Robert Agwu : “Mourinho recommended him“. Abdulmajid Ambali : “I just hope that this new coach will be better than than the former one“.
