Burundi WAFCON 2022: Nigeria Seals Quater-Finals Spot After Win Over Burundi

Nigeria Super Falcons secured a spot in the knockout stage of the WAFCON 2022 following a 4-0 thrashing of Burundi.

The nine-time WAFCON champions got their 10th title chase on track as they finished second behind Banyana Banyana of South Africa who defeated in the opening Group C game.

The Super Falcons after winning their second group game against Botswana knew that only a victory against Burundi can guarantee them a smooth passage to the next round of the WAFCON.

They dominated possession but were unable to get the ball in the net until late in the 25th minute when Rasheedat Ajibade broke the deadlock from the spot.

The goal became the beginning of many more to come as Peace Efih scored the second goal in the 28th minute.

One minute later, Uchenna Kanu found her name on the scoresheet and almost made it 4-0 but the goal was ruled for an offside as the Super Falcons headed to the first half with 3-0 victory.

One minute to the resumption of the second half, Kanu got her brace for the day to take the lead to 4-0 as the Super Falcons cruised to the knockout stage of the WAFCON 2022 joining South Africa.

They will take on the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the quarter-finals on July 14 for a semi final spot.

The four semi-finalists of the WAFCON 2022, will represent Africa in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria has won the WAFCON for a record nine times since the inception of the tournament.
