UEFA Champions League Giroud Fires AC Milan To UEFA Champions League Semis

Milan battled through to the Champions League last four with a 1-1 draw at Napoli to secure a 2-1 overall victory, and Olivier Giroud’s first-half goal was the deciding factor.

Ismael Bennacer’s goal from last week at San Siro gave Milan a 1-0 quarterfinal lead, and on Tuesday in Naples, Milan justifiably extended their aggregate lead.

Alex Meret previously turned away Giroud’s penalty attempt, but he quickly made up for it with the game’s first goal in the 43rd minute following Rafael Leao’s stunning run.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s 82nd-minute penalty was saved by Mike Maignan, giving Napoli hope, but Milan held on to go to their first Champions League semi-final since 2007.

A reckless Mario Rui tackle on Leao gave Milan a wonderful opportunity from 12 yards, but the Rossoneri could have opened the scoring. Matteo Politano just missed two early attempts.

Meret, however, made the perfect judgment call to stop Giroud’s penalty kick for the bottom-right corner before stopping the France veteran again following another feeble attempt from a gilt-edged opportunity.

Next time, the Milan striker was on target as Leao displayed an excellent turn of speed down the left before rolling across to Giroud for the easiest of tap-ins.

On the verge of halftime, Victor Osimhen had a goal disallowed for handball, and Napoli continued to look for an answer with Kvaratskhelia’s just-missed shot after the break.

Due to a handball by Fikayo Tomori, Napoli had a final chance to win the match, but Maignan stopped Kvaratskhelia by diving low to his right.

Osimhen’s late header from Giacomo Raspadori’s cross proved ineffective as Milan fought its way into the semifinals as a result of that missed penalty.
