Africa Soccer Osimhen beats Salah to Best African Award in Ghana

Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has won the Best African International award during the 5th edition of the Ghana Football Awards on Sunday night.

The 24-year-old Osimhen, who features for Italian giants Napoli, beat off competition from Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and treble winner Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City, to clinch the award during the ceremony held at Accra International Conference Center.

In the just concluded Serie A season, Osimhen scored 26 goals to help Napoli claim the Scudetto title for the first time in 33 years and in the process become the first-ever African to achieve the feat. He returned to international duty and led Nigeria to a 3-2 victory against Sierra Leone which guaranteed the Super Eagles’ qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast.

During the Group A fixture at Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, Osimhen scored two goals as Nigeria moved 12 points at the top, while Guinea-Bissau are second on 10, Sierra Leone third on five points and Sao Tome and Principe last with one point.

Osimhen’s great season with Napoli and the Super Eagles puts him in the driving seat to scoop the Caf African Player of the Year Award.
