Europe Man United lead tributes as Van der Sar admitted to intensive care

Former Manchester United and Ajax goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is being treated in intensive care after suffering a bleed on his brain.

The 52-year-old is reportedly being treated in a hospital in Croatia, where he has been on holiday. Ajax said the former Netherlands international, who won 130 caps for his country, is in a “stable condition”.

“Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery,” the Eredivisie club added. “We’re thinking of you.”

Man United have sent a tribute to the player by saying: “Manchester United is holding Edwin van der Sar and his family in our collective thoughts after hearing the news that the legendary goalkeeper has fallen seriously ill.

“The worrying news emerged this Friday afternoon and was confirmed by Ajax, the club he served as a director and most recently as chief executive officer, prior to stepping down from his post this summer.

“Everyone at United wishes to join our friends at Ajax in wishing Edwin all the very best for a full and swift recovery.”

Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand has also wished him well, writing: “Ed is a fighter. Our thoughts are with the Van der Sar family!”, While Fulham wrote: “Everyone at Fulham Football Club wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”

He joined Man United in 2005 from Fulham and made a total of 266 appearances and contributed hugely to the Reds winning four Premier League titles, the Champions League, and Club World Cup, among other trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson.
