Rwanda FERWAFA increases foreign players quota for new season

The Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa), has made amendments concerning the foreign players policy in the Rwanda Premier League for the 2023-24 season.

According to Times Sport, previously, a club could only field five foreign players in a game but the number has now been increased to six. Ferwafa officially wrote to all the 16 clubs in the Rwanda Premier League, on July 27, to communicate the changes.

The increase of slots for foreign players is seen as one of the means of improving the competition. Last season, striker Willy Leandre Onana Essomba from Cameroon, who has since signed for Tanzania giants Simba SC, was arguably the best player in the league and also the top scorer.

He was followed by Uganda’s Yafesi Mubiru and Hussein Shabani of Burundi. The new development is also good for clubs like APR who will be playing in Africa and have signed a host of foreign players.
