Dennis Mabuka

Africa Top Sports writer Dennis Mabuka has been feted alongside 249 other fellow Kenyans by the country’s government for their exemplary work of sports reporting on the local and international scene.

“We have always failed to recognize the work done by sports journalists to inform us on the day-to-day happenings around the world and today we want to celebrate them in a very big way,” Sports CS Ababu Namwamba said, during the ceremony.

“We believe that without journalists, then we will not be informed of what is happening. I want to take this opportunity and on behalf of the government to reward 250 journalists for their resolute work in covering sports news from the local scene up to the international level. I am happy that we are rewarding them when they are alive, so they can enjoy their success.”

Speaking after the event, Mabuka, who has also worked for Standard newspaper, Kenya Times, Star newspaper, CafOnline website, New Vision of Uganda, Goal.com, and People Daily said: “It is a great honour to be feted and recognised by the state for the work we are doing. It is a great day for me and my family, I was not expecting this to happen, but I am grateful to God for this far he us brought me in the world of covering sports.”

Reacting to the good news, Africa Top Sports Chief Executive Franck Orocoti said: “It’s nice to see that one of our own has been rewarded by the government of his country. It is a recognition of the excellent work that he does within the sport in his country and also of the good and correct information that he serves to the readers.

“I’m happy to hear it and at the same time, I’m not surprised because Dennis is a hard-working person. He works even on his day off. He does more than the required and we are satisfied with what he produces within our editorial staff. I can say that this distinction will not give him the opportunity to rest on his laurels but rather a challenge since all eyes are on him. I’m happy for him.”

Other top writers who were recognised during the occasion include James Waindi (People Daily Sports), Elias Makori (Nation Media Group), Chris Mbaisi (Star newspaper), Elyna Shiveka (KBC), Dennis Okeyo (Standard newspaper), Vincent Voiyoo (Media Max), Samson Ateka, William Njuguna (Star), Fred Arocho (Radio 47) and many others.
