Transfers Done Deal: Kenya’s Johanna Omolo signs for KV Oostende

Kenyan international midfielder Johanna Omolo has joined Belgian second-tier side KV Oostende on a season-long loan deal.

A statement on the Oostende website confirmed: “KVO has attracted Johanna Omolo (34). The Kenyan defensive midfielder signed a one-season contract,” adding: “Omolo has swam through quite a few waters in his career and is no stranger, especially in Belgium. He passed at Beerschot, Lommel, Antwerp, Cercle and Visé. He started his Belgian career in the latter club in 2007 and played there again last season. He has 45 matches in the first division and 140 matches in the second division on his account.”

The statement added: “He was also active in Turkey and Luxembourg and played 29 international matches for Kenya. He also has Belgian nationality. Stijn Vreven previously worked with him at Lommel.”

Oostende Director Nils Vanneste explained the reason to sign Omolo: “In the position of a defensive midfielder, we could certainly use someone else, also knowing that Alfons Amade, Sieben Dewaele, and Vincent Koziello are still out. Then the options in that position are already limited,” he said, adding: “If you can bring in an experienced man with the right mentality, you shouldn’t hesitate. In our group he can be a guide for many youngsters and during his test period last week he showed that he is still very enthusiastic on the field.

“Our coach has worked with him before and is also extremely positive. As mentioned earlier, an extra attacker and a creative midfielder are now firmly noted to attract. I hope to be able to finalize at least one more file soon.”

Omolo received his first call-up to the Kenyan national team Harambee Stars in September 2010, making his debut for his country in 2011. He represented Kenya at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and scored a goal against Tanzania, which helped the team win 3-2.
