Kenya Gor Mahia held as Tusker FC defeat Bandari FC in season opener

Gor Mahia kicked off the 2023-24 FKF Premier League season with a 1-1 draw against Sofapaka at Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

Batoto ba Mungu striker Darius Msagha received the first caution after a dangerous foul on Gor’s Rooney Onyango in the 40th minute. Just a minute before halftime, Sofapaka took the lead through Msagha’s deflected effort, heading into halftime with an advantage.

In the 82nd minute, Benson Omalla converted from the spot to equalize for Gor Mahia, putting them back in the game. Despite both teams’ efforts to break the draw, the full-time whistle sealed the score at 1-1. In another fixture at Mbaraki, ten-man Tusker, who finished last season second, secured three points by defeating Bandari FC. The Brewers took the lead in the 42nd minute through a James Kibande corner delivery, expertly finished by Deograstiois Ojok.

However, in the 58th minute, Tusker’s David Odoyo received a straight red card from the referee. Nzoia Sugar kicked off their season with a 2-1 victory against Ulinzi Stars at Sudi Stadium. Meanwhile, Kariobangi Sharks and Kenya Police played out a goalless draw at Kasarani Annex.

Four more matches are scheduled for Sunday to complete the first round of fixtures.
