La Liga Santander Sevilla sack coach Jose Luis after poor run of results

Sevilla have sacked head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar in the wake of a horrible start to the new season, as confirmed by the club.

The La Liga club picked up only two wins in eight games since the season started while suffering two draws and four defeats; the club decided to part ways with their head coach following their 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano over the weekend.

A statement from Sevilla said: “Following a meeting of the Club’s Management Committee, Sevilla FC have decided to relieve José Luis Mendilibar of his duties as the club’s head coach following the results at the start of the season,” adding: “The club would like to thank the Basque coach for his services, whose role will go down in the Club’s history after winning the UEFA Europa League in Budapest, the seventh time the club has won the tournament.”

José Luis Mendilibar was in the dugout for 28 official matches. This season, he has a record of two wins, five draws, and four defeats. In the 2022-23 season, since taking charge of the team, he accumulated eight wins, six draws, and three defeats between La Liga and the Europa League.

It is Sevilla’s third dismissal in a year following Julen Lopetegui and Sampaoli in what is turning out to be a managerial merry-go-round at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The Andalusian outfit are currently 14th in La Liga and third in their Champions League group behind Lens and Arsenal, having registered two draws in two games.
