The world governing body of football said that it has begun disciplinary actions in response to the crowd disruptions that resulted in a delay in the World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina at the Maracana Stadium.

During the national anthems of Thursday’s match, fans of Brazil and Argentina began fighting behind one of the goals. This prompted police to charge towards the visiting team with drawn batons.

Leading by captain Lionel Messi, the visiting world champions attempted to defuse the issue on the terraces before retreating from the pitch for over ten minutes.

FIFA can confirm that its Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) and the Argentinian Football Association (AFA),” FIFA said in a statement on Friday.

Argentina may be subject to disciplinary action for possible violations of FIFA disciplinary rule “Articles 17.2 and 14.5” concerning delayed kickoff and crowd disruption, respectively.

FIFA further stated that Brazil is being investigated for any breaches of “Article 17,” which deals with upholding security and order during games.

After a lengthy wait, the match began, and Nicolas Otamendi, a defender, scored Argentina’s lone goal, 1-0.
