Kenya Gor Mahia open four-point lead as AFC Leopards stop Homeboyz march

Gor Mahia opened a four-point lead at the top of the FKF Premier League table and kept their unbeaten start to the campaign following a convincing 2-0 victory against stubborn FC Talanta at Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday.

The defending champions went into the matchday 15 fixture seeking to open a gap against their closest challengers Kakamega Homeboyz. KCB, Posta Rangers, and they were rewarded courtesy of second-half goals from Boniface Omondi and Austin Odhiambo.

The win, their eighth of the current campaign, saw K’Ogalo’s point tally reach 31, four more than second-placed KCB, who had defeated Kenya Police 2-1 in another top fixture on Saturday. Gor Mahia have won eight matches, drawn seven, and remain the only side in the top flight yet to test defeat.

Meanwhile, Posta, who have been enjoying the league’s leadership for most parts of the season, failed to close in on Gor Mahia after they were held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Muhoroni Youth. The draw saw Posta drop to position four on 26 points, five below leaders Gor Mahia. K’Ogalo’s stay at the top was also boosted further by their rivals AFC Leopards, who ended their winless run by beating Homeboyz 2-0 at Nyayo Stadium.

Heading into the fixture, Abana Beingo were sitting second on the table but goals from Clifton Miheso, a well-taken penalty, and Hassan Beja, who grabbed his first-ever goal for Ingwe, ensured the Kakamega-based outfit suffered their fourth defeat of the season and dropped to third with 27 points.

The victory propelled Ingwe from the relegation zone to position 13 with 14 points, accumulated from two wins, eight draws, and five defeats. In other matches, Ulinzi Stars’ free fall continued after they gave away an early lead to suffer a 2-1 defeat against Nairobi City Stars in their backyard. The Soldiers’ under coach Anthony Kimani are now lying 12th with 17 points, having managed five wins, two draws, and suffered eight defeats. Only Ulinzi and AFC have lost eight matches so far.

For Simba wa Nairobi, the hard-fought win ensured they kept their sixth place with 24 points coming from seven wins, three draws, and five defeats. Elsewhere, Tusker made it two wins out of two following their 2-0 result against Nzoia Sugar away to move to seventh with 22 points. The game saw striker the Brewers’ lead striker Erik Kapaito find the back of the net again having scored a brace in their 3-2 victory against Bidco United on Wednesday.
